With three consecutive starts under his belt, Arizona Cardinal starting quarterback John Skelton is beginning to feel more comfortable in the position he has dreamed his whole life of getting. In his first start of his career he led the Cardinals to a victory over the Denver Broncos. After a disappointing loss to the Carolina Panthers in his second start, the Cardinals played the Dallas Cowboys on Christmas night. After leading most of the game, the Cowboys took the lead with under two minutes to go in the game. During the last drive, Skelton found Larry Fitzgerald on a 4th and 15 and eventually led the offense down into field goal range where Jay Feely kicked the game winning field goal to give the Cardinals a much deserved victory.

With all of this experience that he is gaining, Skelton is positioning himself as a legitimate answer to the Cardinals needs at the quarterback position in the future.

Skelton looking sharp

John Skelton got his first game action during the Cardinals preseason game Saturday night against the Houston Texans and the 5th Round Draft choice of the Cardinals in this April’s draft did not disappoint. He led the team to a come from behind victory while throwing his first touchdown pass and a 158.3 passer rating.

Skelton to Cards

Fordham quarterback John Skelton (pictured here with Washington Redskin quarterback Colt Brennan and quarterback coach Travis Brown) was selected in the 2010 NFL draft. The Arizona Cardinals traded starting cornerback Bryant McFadden along with their sixth round selection to move up in the draft to select Skelton who was taken 155th overall in the 5th Round.

This is a great opportunity for Skelton having the opportunity to come into a system where he will be able to learn from a great coaching staff and not be forced to play right away. The Cardinals have Matt Leinart as well as Derek Anderson as quarterbacks on their roster.

Skelton is somewhat familiar with Arizona as he spent 2 months in the Phoenix area prior to the NFL Scouting Combine training at Fischer Sports as well as working with Travis Brown (Quarterback Coach) getting ready for the combine as well as his pro-day. There has been a lot of buzz recently on Skelton in the national media with his draft stock rising. The Cardinals got a top quality talent at quarterback as well as someone with the right attitude and work ethic to be extremely successful in the National Football League.

During the quarterback camp held last month, “Follow Me…” was the theme for everybody in attendance.

Whether you like it or not, YOU ARE A LEADER. As a quarterback of a football team, you are a natural leader that everyone is looking to to lead them on and off the football field. You can be a vocal leader, or one who would rather lead with actions more than words, but either way you do not have a choice of whether or not you want to be a leader. Too many people in our society today shy away from acting like a leader. There are many followers, but few leaders. With a leadership role like playing quarterback, you have a choice on which direction you are going to lead people. You can either lead them in a direction that will help the team, or in a direction that will hurt the team. This is also true with life. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 11:1, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” Paul was confident in his leadership because he knew that the person he was leading people to was someone that would save them. WHAT ARE YOU LEADING PEOPLE TO?

We gave camp participants a bracelet that said “Follow Me…” 1 Cor 11:1. This bracelet is meant to act as a reminder that it is okay to step up and act like a leader as long as you’re leading people to the right things. If you are interested in receiving a bracelet and are willing to lead people, please contact me and I will send you one.

Spring Blitz

On Saturday, March 13th, Camp Blitz conducted “Spring Blitz” for over 110 kids. The camp was held at Christ’s Church of the Valley. The camp again featured top quality coaching, fun competitions and a few surprises. All the campers were treated to a special appearance by All-Pro Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher. Kids were given the opportunity to interact with Brian.

Camp Blitz focused on instruction in many different positions focusing on proper techniques and drills for positions including Linebacker, Running Back, Wide Receivers and Defensive Backs. These drills showed players not just the latest skills to make them better players, but it also gave them the opportunity to put their newly learned skills into action through competition.

As always with Camp Blitz, it was much more than just being about football skills. The theme for Spring Blitz was “True Value” coming from 1 Timothy 4:8. Campers were taught that the skills they were learning did carry some value especially for the football field, however “True Value” that will last for eternity can only be found in Godly character.

Waiting

The only thing left to do is wait. That is what John Skelton is doing as he waits for this upcoming weekend to see where he will begin his NFL career. Skelton has been moving up draft boards ever since his personal workout in March. He is considered by many as the sleeper in this year’s draft, but with all the latest buzz, the “sleeper” status might have to get dropped. Skelton was featured in an article in the USA Today just 3 days before the draft. You can read the USA Today Article by clicking on the link below. Skelton will learn his NFL fate during the draft which starts this Thursday and goes through Saturday.

Camp Blitz Approaching

“Spring Blitz” is approaching fast. We will be holding our Spring version of Camp Blitz on Saturday March 13, 2010 from Noon to 4 pm at Christ’s Church of the Valley. This camp will again feature top quality skill instruction from former NFL players as well as some of the valley’s best high school and college coaches. We are adding a few new wrinkles to this camp including having a former NFL coach conduct tackling instruction throughout the day camp.

As always with Camp Blitz, we are proud to feature some surprises the campers will enjoy. Current Chicago Bears stars Charles Tillman, Lance Briggs and Mike Brown will be appearing at the camp. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Charles Tillman foundation benefiting the lives of children needing organ donations.

Our camp theme this time is “True Value”. We will be emphasizing what things in life bring value over others. Join us for this great opportunity to learn football skills from the best all the while having fun in a great, positive atmosphere.
